Distinguished and Famous people from Tiwi Islands
🎨 Jean Baptiste Apuatimi
Jean Baptiste Apuatimi developed a distinctive painting practice grounded in Tiwi culture and the artistic knowledge shared with her husband, carver Declan Apuatimi. After his death in 1985, she worked at Milikapiti on Melville Island, moving from ironwood carving towards ochre painting. She later returned to Wurrumiyanga on Bathurst Island and became an important artist at Tiwi Design. Her paintings carried that inherited knowledge into highly individual compositions. One remembered starting point was a sawfish bone that Declan painted after the fish had been eaten, an everyday material transformed through ceremonial design. Her work subsequently entered major public collections.
🖌️ Kitty Kantilla
Kitty Kantilla, also known as Kutuwulumi Purawarrumpatu, brought Tiwi geometric designs into carvings and ochre paintings. From Yimpinari Country on Melville Island, she later lived at Paru and Milikapiti, developing an artistic career across ironwood, bark, paper and canvas. She was a founding member of Jilamara Arts and Crafts Association in 1989. The designs and materials connected her work with knowledge carried from childhood and community life, while exhibitions brought it before wider audiences. A major National Gallery of Victoria retrospective toured in 2007–08, recognising the achievement of an artist whose practice remained closely grounded in the islands.
🌕 Timothy Cook
Timothy Cook works at Milikapiti on Melville Island, using earth pigments in paintings with emphatic circles, dots and lines. His Kulama paintings draw on designs associated with the Tiwi ceremony held around the late-wet-season yam harvest. The National Gallery of Victoria explains the moon, yam and ceremonial-circle associations in his 2012 Kulama work, alongside a cross reflecting his Christian spirituality. Cook won the overall Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award in 2012. His practice has also included painting carved objects in collaboration with other makers, joining individual expression with the shared work of an island art centre.
🏉 Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti
Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti grew up on the Tiwi Islands, playing for the Tiwi Bombers before moving to Victoria at seventeen. His route to Essendon's senior side included Gippsland football and several seasons in the club's VFL programme, followed by selection in the 2015 rookie draft. His speed, tackling and attacking play made him a popular AFL forward. After his final retirement he again played for the Tiwi Bombers before taking up community work in Mildura, including school visits and football clinics focused on children's wellbeing. The islands supplied both his early football environment and an enduring connection beyond his professional career.
